Medium — When it Isn’t Working: The Overwhelming Crush of Raising a Mentally Ill Child
Twelve isn’t an easy age. I remember it well. That feeling of being in the wrong skin, of your expanding consciousness, of the weight of impending adulthood and big, important choices, coming just around the bend. But I wasn’t austistic. Nor did I have a host of other diagnoses. Nor had I been hospitalized. We have been through a great deal with our son. We’ve had just about every intervention you can imagine at this point. He even had a stint at the incredible Wright School in Durham, NC. We had hoped that after that work he could make it work at his private school — a fantastic institution that is built for kids…

A Little Literature Love Part One: Fran Wilde and Rivers Solomon
The books that helped me endure 2018. A few years ago I made a very deliberate decision to read more. This was rather difficult because adding time to my calendar wasn’t an option. Oddly enough, the space-time continuum just wasn’t answering my calls. Finding any peace and quiet was almost impossible given the two kids I have (and the one with ASD who tends to, against the stereotype, be quite loud). That meant changing my approach, much in the same way I had to change my writing approach once my job meant more work and more travel. Not writing is just as horrid as not reading. If there’s one “trick” that’s worked for…

That's 160,000 when it becomes an omnibus. I guess I have been busy.

Introducing the Zegedine!
What’s that? Well, a zegedine is a drinking cup. But it’s also my (mostly) weekly newsletter. Hello, Natania. Is this 2001? No, clearly it’s not. So why would I bother with a newsletter? A couple of reasons. These days I have a lot more time to post bobbles and bits together than I do to write long, rambling posts about how to write. Lord knows I’ve done enough of those in the ten-odd years I’ve been blogging. The truth is I know how my writing career has gone, and while some of those posts might be helpful, I’m not so sure it’s my best focus. Secondly, well, I’m a many-armed…

Where Hath April Fled?
April has a certain literary weight to it, doesn’t it? Regardless of what Chaucer or Eliot thought, one thing is clear: April has come and gone too fast for my liking. This in-between month has lived up to its reputation here in North Carolina, however, and we’ve had lots of rain and a very cool spring. The skies finally cleared today and it’s been a bright afternoon, crisp and blue-skied, with the promise of more to come. My first cosmo bloomed. I’ve been cataloguing wildflowers in the forest. Writing has been going well. A few weeks ago I finished the first draft of Glassmere. For those who might not remember, it’s…

My Illogicon 2018 Schedule!
I am so excited to attend Illogicon again this year. It’s seriously one of my favorites. Okay, probably my favorite (sorry everyone else). I have the pleasure of being on 8 different bits of programming with some seriously awesome humans, many of whom I count as dear. If you’re in Raleigh next weekend, be sure to swing by! And if you’re planning on attending, be sure to check out the whole list! Also, if you haven’t purchased my books yet there will be plenty on hand! And my reading will include some fun sneak peeks. Friday – 7pm Turn Anything into an RPG! – Reynolds Have you ever had…

The Sound of October Revival
One of the things I’m most excited about regarding 2018 is the release of Rock Revival. The book took shape about 5 years ago, right after the birth of my daughter. No, it’s not a genre book. Yes, I’m usually a genre writer, but to be quite honest I’ve never seen myself as a genre writer exclusively. It’s just how things have mostly shaken out. Music is a huge part of my life. It always has been. I’m lucky to have grown up in recording studios and always surrounded by the sounds of people singing, playing guitars, and plugging in amplifiers. Both my sister and I have been singing Beatles…
